PR Firms That Blog
By Tom Foremski - September 1, 2006
I keep saying it, don't trust that your PR firm knows how to deal with bloggers and the blogosphere unless they have some knowledge and practical experience. You cannot "get it" unless you do it.
Here is a list of early pioneers from the Bivings Report. BTW, even if you start blogging now, you will still become an early pioneer, we haven't yet begun ... :-)

I think part of the struggle here is that large PR firms have historically viewed the web as a design function. They build websites using the same process they would use to design a brochure: bring in the "web/design" guys to help out the account team on a specific project and then call it a day. I think many firms continue to make this mistake by having internal "new" or "social" media specialists that come in like the special forces when their is a client need. Ultimatley to get it you've got to have "new" media expertise across offices and account teams. You don't need a few "blog" guys. Everyone should be a "blog" guy.
This is a huge adjustment for large PR firms to make.

The number of small and medium size PR firms with blogs casts a long shadow on this list, but no surprises there. Sadly, I think too many firms (big and small) consider an agency blog as some sort of check-off box for their social media capabilities. Yup, we got one. Yup, we get it. It's not that easy....

And, 463 made it under the 2004 cut-off by starting our blog the day we launched as a company. (December 9, 2004)

SHIFT's been bloggin' away since June 2004. I agree with Mike Manuel, though - blogging for blogging's sake, while laudable, can't be "just" a check-off item. It requires a change in mindset.

I'm going to start a sidebar that lists the PR blogs and I'll try and rank them too, probably Technorati rankings for now, Alexa is really skewed.
Yes, a change in mindset is needed, but just having a blog is a good place to start. And also who is doing the blogging because if it is junior staff, the mindset change isn't going to happen.

Tom,
We've gotten some response to our posts on official PR firm blogs with folks asking to be listed. We've created a page on our Wiki where we'll allow PR firms to add their blog if they have one. We also include Technorati rank.

Thanks Todd
