Announcing the first AJAX banner ad!

A little while ago I challenged my readers to come up with something different from advertising banners and marketing messages.

I have asked many people, "What else could you do in the space taken up by a banner ad, or a side-column skyscraper ad? Something that is novel and is useful to the readers rather than flashing and annoying marketing messages. Maybe something which demonstrates your thought-leadership or that of your clients."

Well, I've been collecting some excellent suggestions and we've only just begun.

My favorite so far, is from SVW sponsor Tibco, which is to produce an AJAX based "banner ad." It will showcase Tibco's AJAX prowess, but it could also usher in an entirely different type of media component.

As far as I know this will be the the world's first AJAX banner ad!

And it will be the first banner ad that is also an application!

But what should the content of such a new AJAX banner ad be?

We're working on two ideas, which should be ready by the new year. And I'd love to hear your thoughts on this, and just what do you think would make for great content or application, utilizing this concept.

Also, this is exactly the kind of thing I, and hopefully you, my readers want to be involved in: innovation. This comes from the application of technologies, processes, and insight. And it is a lot more exciting than doing things the old way, imho :-)

I haven't a clue if this is feasible but it sounds good - to me that is:

>Choice of 6 x 2 minute customer story movies covering key industries with suitable 'We're not here to sell, but for our customers to tell their story. Then you can decide whether you'd like us to contact you. Either way, we'd like to hear from you, we'd like your impression of what our customers say. Thanks for your time' intro/talkover

Y. To TIBX marketing
N. To optional 5-line TinyMCE style interface that leaves short blog entry for consumption internally at TIBX.

Alternatively a short series of Y/N questions e.g. 'Was the content real to you?' + short 'comments' box

At TIBX end could
use event monitoring for:
1. downloads
2. Y/N
3. key words coming from fixed questions (+ key words NOT being picked up)
4. pass onto marketing/sales for analysis
5. include impressions, opinions etc on TIBX blog site
6. tie in blog to global sales processes
7. use info for feedback into marketing campaigns, media strategies, positioning, market intelligence and industry targeting
8. tailor for local markets but with global presence in mind e.g. FSI is OK NY and London...
9. learn from experience of above to tailor offering, vids etc

Actually an internal team at Yahoo! that I've been working with developed AJAX ads 8 months ago to pull in Overture XML ad feeds based on contextual keyword determination of the page content. We've since tied it to a Flash front-end that's doing the same thing but with better visual control, but the fully AJAX version shows up if you don't have Flash. You may see them from time to time on the Yahoo! network.
