Sun Microsystems' Jonathan Schwartz: Valley's new century leader
Moderator:
John Markoff, The New York Times
Missed it. Because I'm pretty sure they missed it. All three are solid executives and they'd certainly make the top 100, but Silicon Valley's new leaders? Really? Are you sure? Could you double check?
John, please tell me you had no control over the picks, please. It was probably Tony, right? It's just so 1990s it has to be Tony, his fingerprints are all over it.
. . .
I like the Churchill Club, it has interesting events much of the time. My most recent visit was a lot of fun, here it is if you missed it:

I attended the event, and as you would expect from this kind of panel no revelations, no matter how hard Markoff tried. That said, the three have unique approaches, challenges and personalities that suit their missions.
Pony-tailed Schwartz at Sun has to take it to the streets (via his blog), calling out HP and IBM, daring them to debate him in public or meet at dawn for a duel with pistols--for example, Sun alleges in his blog that IBM is trying to strangle Solaris 10 by not certifying and supporting its enterprise software Sun's soon-to-be-open source software on x86 systems.
The well-tailored Phillips and Oracle want to own the street (PeopleSoft/J.D. Edwards, xxx) and the ebullient Rosensweig (my former colleague) of Yahoo (345 million users) wants to have a special relationship with everyone in the street.

Where is the Robot-Valley?
"Will Silicon Valley, the unquestioned center of the computer tech boom, also become the 'Silicon Valley' of robotics? According to Pete Markiewicz, the Valley mindset, along with the other factors that created the virtual worlds of the PC and Internet, might not be well suited to the development of devices that must operate in the rough-and-tumble of the real world."
