Heading for New York City and the Impact '05 conference...

By Tom Foremski for SiliconValleyWatcher

Impact-05.jpg
I'm excited to be heading to New York city this week to be a panelist at the Impact Conference held at New York University.

I'll be on panel with Joe Trippi, Howard Dean's political strategist and mastermind of an extremely effective Internet campaign that showed how blogging and other media technologies can be used by politicians to great effect.

I don't think it is an exaggeration if I say that the legacy of Mr Trippi's pioneering work will be seen in every future political election campaign in the US.

A very happy Andy Plesser, the organiser of the conference, tells me that the number of senior level executives attending the conference is phenomenal. I can't wait.

BTW, registrations are still open and will be open the day of the conference (September 15) and if you mention SiliconValleyWatcher you save $100 bucks because we are a media sponsor of the event.

From Impact '05:

Join Leading Journalists, Academics and Bloggers in New York City on September 15

Blogs, video news online, mass text messaging, social networking, RSS feeds and podcasting are challenging the dominance of conventional media and influencing public attitudes and corporate reputations. This unique, one-day conference will explore these issues with leading thinkers and practitioners.

SVW readers get a discount to Under the Radar November 16! I'll be one of the moderators along with Steve Fox, chief editor at Infoworld and Michael Copeland from Business 2.0

Under-Radar.jpg
The lovely ladies of IDB Network have organized another Under the Radar event, in which startups parade their pitches in front of jaded judges from the VC community. Can their passion convert some of the Simons into Paulas? (I know at least one on the list that can.)

Just mention Silicon Valley Watcher and you'll get a "friends" discount. Here is a link to the secret discount site ;-)

I'll try to be as disruptive as possible while Steve and Michael will represent the traditional media--good cop/bad cops style--or, maybe not. Either way, it'll be good to see you there, on the Microsoft Silicon Valley campus.

Here is a link to main page, remember the secret discount link is here ;-)

And here is a list of companies and judges:

Boundary Battles: What is a Journalist and Why Does it Matter?
10:15am - 11:15am

As traditional media's role has become challenged by citizen fact checkers offering commentary on events and increasing amounts of original reporting, journalists and editors have often responded by setting up boundaries between who is a "real reporter"and who isn't. This panel will re-visit some of the major battles of this ongoing war, while revealing what the real debates should be about.

Panel Participants
Jen McClure, executive director of the Society for New Communications Research - MODERATOR
Tom Foremski, editor, founder, publisher, Silicon Valley Watcher
Dan Farber, vice president of editorial, CNET, editor-in-chief ZDNet
Tom Abate, MiniMediaGuy

Software_2006.gifI've run into MR Rangaswami from the excellent Sandhill.com, several times this week and each time I see him I've been hassling him about giving my readers a special discount to his upcoming Software 2006 enterprise software conference.

I missed the first day of Software 2006 but I made it to the reception and dinner

By Tom Foremski for SiliconValleyWatcher

It was late in the day when I got to the Software 2006 conference on Tuesday and some people were already leaving. As I walked the short distance from the car park to the Santa Clara Convention Center I kept running into people I knew and so it took me an hour or more to get into the conference area.

First, I run into Fred Vogelstein, who is now independent and I had just an hour earlier emailed and he is with Andy Lark, the former Sun Microsystems comms chief and one of my topten media/communications professionals.

Andy really understands how to use this new media and figured things out a long time ago. I catch up with Andy then I meet Shanker Trivedi, from Callidus Software who turns out to be the cousin of Edward Luce, a former colleague at the Financial Times.

[Edward is a raconteur in the classic style--marvelously entertaining and will tell stories for hours as long there is an adequate supply of red wine and cigarettes. His father was once Governor of Gibraltar so Edward's stories illuminate a unique section of British society.]

Then I run into Jean-Baptiste Su the French correspondent for La Tribune, who now also is running a restaurant called Gervais on 14560 Big Basin Way in Saratoga, CA 95070. Then I walk straight into Jim Finn comms chief at Ingres, then Tom Berquist, the Ingres CFO and former star Wall Street analyst walks up and chats for a few minutes. Then Bruce Lowry, comms chief at Novell walks by and I taunt him a little bit about Novell's open source business and how come it has gotten so badly out of whack.

I think Novell should take a look at how Wind River did things, and adapted to open-source. Wind River used to be very anti-Linux then they swung the other way and embraced it and made money for the first time in years.

Bruce got away with a minor ribbing, and then we walked into the reception. I ran into Ross Mayfield, from SocialText. Dan Farber of ZDNet was there, of course, loaded with camera and other gear. One of these days I will see Dan with a satellite transmitter in a backpack so he can upload his blog, his video blog, his photos, and his podcast simultaneously. I think Al Franken style though would be a lot cooler looking :-)

So Ross and Dan and I manage to grab a few minutes of secret blogger conversation before we get split up by vendors wanting to chat. I remember that Ross said his company had just launched a mobile wiki, and he was calling it a Miki. I told him I could sell him the domain name WalkAbout Wiki dot com for a reasonable price, but he said he preferred Miki.

Turns into a big production

TiEcon 2006 speaker list: Shashi Tharoor, Howard Dean, David Lynch, John Doerr and Judy Estrin . . .

The annual TiE conference (May 12-13) is one of the best Silicon Valley conferences for startups and this year it features one of the best speaker line ups I've seen:

Shashi Tharoor, United Nations Under Secretary General for Communications and Public Information, will provide a geopolitical perspective on the conference theme of Disruption and Convergence followed by John Doerr.

Also on the speaker list is David Lynch, Howard Dean, and serial entrepreneur Judy Estrin. Here are all the details:

Save the date: First Friday with Foremski at the new de Young museum

I've been wanting to do some offline events and get to meet some of my readers in an informal setting, and not make it abut tech or business but about community and society (culture).

This week I'm launching First Friday an extremely informal get together on the first Friday of every month 5pm to 7pm at the stunning new de Young museum in Golden Gate park.

That's where I generally start out my Friday evenings, the museum is open until 8.45pm and you can come by, say hi, hang out, and check out the exhibits. There is usually an excellent string quartet or jazz ensemble playing, and also very excellent cocktails (you have to order the Green Fairy!). The museum attracts a small eclectic crowd on Fridays, just like my readers :-)

First Friday with Foremski is also linked to my new spot at the San Francisco Chronicle and my weekly online column titled "Fridays with Foremski." But it is not sponsored by anybody, there won't be any free drinks or food, just me and maybe one or two others...

So come on by this Friday, May 5th, it'll be worth it just to catch the San Francisco Conservatory of Music performing Dvorak from 6pm to 8.30pm.

I'll be in the public areas either in the gardens or inside listening to the music. Buzz me on my cell 415 336 7547 or text me if you can't find me. I hope to see you at First Friday!

Top Silicon Valley execs are Out for Blood! Charity fundraiser starts online May 8

This just in from Stacy Libby at Voce Communications:

Seagate CEO Bill Watkins -- along with eBay President Bill Cobb, Symantec CEO John Thompson and Solectron CEO Mike Cannon -- are out for blood. They’ve joined forces to support a major fundraiser for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, which invests in blood cancer research and patient services. The fundraiser – appropriately named Out for Blood -- is a charity auction on eBay running May 8-18. The site -- www.ebay.com/outforblood - goes live tonight.

These high-profile Silicon Valley tech executives have graciously donated their time to support this fundraiser. They have created one-of-a-kind opportunities for bidders to spend quality time with them, such as one-on-one lunch meetings and rounds of golf.

Next week: I'm speaking at PRSA Counselors Academy in Savannah

I'm looking forward to next week when I'll be speaking at the PRSA's Counselors Academy conference in Savannah, Georgia. I've never been to Savannah, but I've seen the city in a movie and it looks fabulous.

The conference collects some of the most senior people in the US public relations industry and I'll be speaking on the topic of the new media and the new roles for journalists and PR people.

As communications professionals we are all involved in fast changing times, and there is a lot of fear and misunderstanding out there on the new media, how to interact with bloggers, how do companies change their communications strategies, what are good practices, what not to do, and many other issues. I hear the same questions wherever I go, and although I am a media entrepreneur and my main interest is in launching media ventures, I am increasingly being asked to provide consulting services to companies, public relations firms, and also large media groups.

And that's what the Leader Sponsors of SVW will receive, first access to my consulting time, which is a limited resource.

I hope to see some of you in Savannah!

Tech Con Friday

By Richard Koman for SiliconValleyWatcher.com

Notes on conferences current and future:

BlogHer

BlogHer is holding forth today and tomorrow at the San Jose Hyatt. What was a nice little chickcon last year has blown up into a sold-out monster this year (more proof that SV is in full swing). "How could we expect it to turn into this?" the Chronicle quotes Elisa Camahort, BlogHer's president of marketing and events. With 700 attendees this year, "We can all agree now, women are the power of Web 2.0," founder Lisa Stone told News.com. Arianna speaks tomorrow.

But, hey, is these heady Web 2.0 days, BlogHer isn't just about female power - or maybe it is, as in purchasing power.

Camahort then told the group that based on demographic studies that BlogHer has conducted, the for-profit organization has an audience that's very attractive to advertisers. She said that more than 80 percent of BlogHer readers make more than $50,000 a year, 90 percent have at least a college education and half write their own blogs.

Real Estate Connect

Today concludes Real Estate Connect, where some real money is floating around. The searing hot real estate buzz is on Zillow, which just picked up $25 mil and Reply!, which got $17 million. But the big story really is that Realtors (mustn't forget the capital R) are finally embracing tech in a big way, the Mercury's Sue McAllister reports.

``There's a feeding frenzy,'' said Glenn Kelman, chief executive of Redfin, a Seattle-based online brokerage now operating in the Bay Area, as businesses attempt to add more features to their sites.

But is this frenzy truly bubble behavior? "How much of it is good for the consumer and how much of it is just smart technology people doing what they did in the late '90s, is a question," pondered Mark Brandemuehl of online brokerage Movoto.com.

SES San Jose

At Search Engine Strategies San Jose, Aug. 7-10, features a conversation between Search Engine Watch's Danny Sullivan and Google CEO Eric Schmidt Aug. 9. The Google Dance is Tuesday, Aug. 8. An ongoing thread of related parties and events is maintained on SEW.

What's the future for the software industry? Ask academia...

Carnegie Mellon University and the University of California, Berkeley have joined together for a one day conference on April 30th in Mountain View. Academics and industry leaders will discuss issues and trends for "the new software industry."

They promise that there will be no product demos (how about no PowerPoints too...)

"The software industry is consistently in a state of flux, yet developments such as globalization and outsourcing are altering both the tempo and the type of change taking place," said James Morris, dean of Carnegie Mellon West. "We are entering a period of profound change, and we all need to know what's happening and what we can expect going forward. This conference draws on some of the best and brightest minds in academe and the software industry to answer those questions."

Added Jack Grantham, executive director of the Haas School 's Fisher Information Technology Center , "This conference presents a rare opportunity for vendors to check their sales and marketing hats at the door and settle into discussion and debate over the future of the industry with attendees, academics, and other industry thought leaders."

For more information on the conference, visit http://west.cmu.edu/sofcon/5404216.html and at http://west.cmu.edu/west_connect/events_news/news/6731936.html.

It seems clear to me where the software industry is headed:

  •  it is about software as a service.
  •  it is about moving away from running apps on your own hardware.
  • it is about roll your own apps.
  • it is about offshoring as much development as you can get away with.
  • it is about integrating as much open source software as you can.
  • it is about moving away from a database model of software towards a search-based apps type of approach.
  • it is about creating apps for the small and medium business sector.

To register for the "The New Software Industry: Forces at Play, Business in Motion," go to http://www.acteva.com/booking.cfm?bevaid=128819. The early registration fee of $395 is available until Friday, April 6, 2007.
