Let's Do Better Than Microsoft On Tech Awards For Humanity!
By Tom Foremski - November 13, 2008
Last night at the excellent Tech Museum's Tech Awards 2008 there was an incredible number of superb organizations making the world a better place. The ventures included solar lighting projects for remote villages, schoolrooms, inexpensive tests for controlling diseases, etc.
Muhammad Yunus, 2006 Nobel Peace Prize recipient gave a very inspiring speech about challenging corporations to do more in the developing world and to help put an end to poverty.
The many worthy organizations were all vying for just five $50K cash prizes.
Microsoft is one of the sponsors for one of the $50K prizes, and so is Intel (an SVW sponsor). This total $250K in cash prizes seems puny to me given the massive black-tie gala benefit, and the massive amount of wealth in Silicon Valley (it is the tenth largest economy in the world.)
I'm a huge fan of the Tech Awards, which now enter their ninth year. And in the spirit of Mr Yunus call to challenge corporations to do more for the world's poorest isn't it time to bump up the cash prizes? The $250K total wouldn't have covered the wine bill for the event.
When I mentioned it was time to increase the money to Doug Free, Microsoft's top PR representative in Silicon Valley, he snapped back: "You do better!"
I was taken aback by his rudeness, but I said fine, I will. So help me shame Microsoft into doing better.
I don't have profits of nearly $6bn a quarter. But I do have plenty of digital ink and I can hammer on this point time and again and I'm sure I can help raise more than $50K for a "People's Award" in 2009.
I'll be writing more on this topic and if you support me and the Tech Awards please contact me or leave a comment.
Let's show that Silicon Valley is a generous place and let's show Doug Free that we can do better!
