YHOO pulling ahead in mobile ads, dumps email limits
By Richard Koman - March 28, 2007
Yahoo finally comes out ahead of Google on something obvious and cool - no limits on email storage. Reuters reports that starting in May Yahoo email users will have no limits on storage space. The move reflects the explosion in digital media and the falling price of storage. Call it a business admission that the price of storage is effectively zero.
“We are giving them no reason to ever have to delete old e-mails,” a Yahoo co-founder, David Filo, said in a phone interview. “You can keep stuff forever.”
Also, The Times reports that Yahoo is rolling out a mobile advertising network. Advertisers will be able to place ads on Yahoo's mobile sites and a network of advertisers'. The network is tiny now but count on Yahoo to market this aggressively - for the very good reason that mobile is one sector where they have an advantage over Google.
“One area where Google has not outshined Yahoo is mobile search,” said Kevin Heisler, an analyst at Jupiter Research.“We are being very aggressive on mobile and moving extremely fast to get the building blocks in place,” said Steve Boom, Yahoo’s senior vice president for broadband and mobile. “We felt that business services for publishers is something that was lacking.”
And in that space, AdMob announced Monday that it had received $15 million in second-round financing. The round was led by Accel with Sequoia participating.
